ACHS’s Theatre Department is set to perform Pygmalion this fall. Auditions were Aug. 26 and 27 and roles were announced Sept. 5. Now, the beginning stages of the play are in full swing.
School performances can differ from the original to fit within school guidelines. For Pygmalion, senior Tess Sidley, Stage Manager, says, “We are keeping it in the same time period. I think with any production there’s a different take on certain things depending on actors…. [but] we’re keeping it pretty traditional.”
The Stage Crew interest meeting was the tenth and set construction is in the beginning stages.
Sidley says, “…we just got our crew interest meeting done and we’re waiting to see what numbers we end up with to see what would be possible with [the] set and what we could do with transitions.”
There are only five scenes in the play, each is considered their own act due to their length. With this length comes many set pieces. The set in the play script is detailed.
Sidley said it will be “… a new challenge for us because there’s a lot [of] … different pieces to change and move but- it’s also very interesting because we have a limited number of … specific sets”.
“I think when you look past other productions, these sets are going to be very different,” Sidley said. “We have a good team, we have good actors. We’ve got a lot of fresh eyes in this theater department … I’m very excited.”
The play Pygmalion was written by George Bernad Shaw in 1898. The story follows Eliza, a flower seller from the slums, finding independence in society.
Sophomore Mia Hasley, Wing Manager, said ticket access and availability for ACHS’s Pygmalion is currently undecided. The performance dates are Nov. 7, 8, 13, 14 and 25.
