Athletic Director James Parker and Treasurer Lorena Reyes Contribute in Ways Large and Small

Athletic Director James Parker

James L. Parker lives and breathes sports. As athletic director, his job is to plan and schedule sporting events, manage the teams and coaches, and create fitness goals for T.C.

Parker was recently hired in August of 2018. He has lived in the state of Virginia for most of his life, attending Patrick Henry High School outside of Richmond. He wants to continue Alexandria City’s legacy of producing excellent athletes.

Parker has collaborated with Hutchings to create their fitness goals for T.C. In order to start this process, ACPS must first establish fitness standards for all schools. Then, Parker will personalize this goal to fit the school’s needs.

“Our job is to create goals that create a first-class athletic program that all students have an opportunity to participate in. We also make sure that we get information out to everybody and create safe environments for everyone to play in,” said Parker.

Parker works with an assistant director of operations and a coordinator of outreach.

“The benefit I get from being the athletic director is being able to watch a lot of sporting events all the time,” said Parker. “…You also get some behind the scenes stuff about how coaches are strategizing about winning games and how students feel before and after the game. It is so fun to be a part of that process and the athlete’s journey.”

Treasurer Lorena Reyes

Lorena Reyes, the school treasurer takes care of the finances, receives money from sporting events, activities, club fundraisers, orders supplies, and reimburses checks.

She helps students by clearing up deficiencies, by paying it or making a payment plan. Also, she communicates and does research with the teachers to make sure everything is accurate for students.

Reyes believes that her job as treasurer was meant to be. She has worked with numbers since she was a student at Washington Lee High School (now Washington Liberty High School.)

“I worked in a bank, it was actually fun. I do not see myself doing anything else,” she said.

Every summer the treasurer participates in an audit.  ACPS brings in an accounting firm to check her work to make sure it is accurate and follows ACPS policies. This causes her summers to be very busy.

During the fall, when she is all done with the summer tasks, she travels. Reyes says she loves to explore and discover new places. When she has work and is not traveling, she likes to listen to music and go on walks.

Reyes is completing her post-secondary education. She started off at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) anwent to George Mason University, where she studies business management and accounting.
