On January 29, the Alexandria City varsity boys basketball team solidified their number-one seeding in the Patriot District beating the West Potomac Wolverines 65-60. The Titans are now 2-0 against the Wolverines this season.
The Titans led the whole game with great plays on offense and tight man-to-man defense. They played very physically, committing 23 personal fouls and three technical fouls.
Throughout the first half, the Titans dominated on both ends of the court and went into halftime with a 12-point lead. Once the second half began, though, the Wolverines started to come together and it seemed like a comeback was possible. However, the Titans never stopped scoring and maintained their lead the whole way.
The Titans were led by senior guard Kye Robinson who scored a career-high 35 points. In the game’s closing seconds, the Wolverines were down 62-60 and fouled Robinson several times. Robinson kept his composure and went 7-8 at the line in the last two minutes allowing the Titans to secure the win.
“[I knew] knocking down those free throws would win us the game and I needed to make them,” Robinson said.
“[It] feels great; we are finally getting our team back together,” said Titans Head Coach Ty Sally.
“This is a big win . . . Every time you play West Potomac it’s a big game.”
The Titans stand at a record of 15-5 and have two remaining regular-season games. playoffs.
With this victory, it’s all but official that they will be the one-seed in the district tournament, which is important because it will let them skip the first round and go straight to the semifinals.
“We’re excited, we all know the mission and task at hand, and we know we have to work harder to reach that ultimate goal,” said Robinson
“We just need to keep working on putting two halves together, and once we do, we’re gonna be dangerous,” said Coach Sally.
