It’s still early in the Titans varsity football season, but it is clear that the team has shown determination. It’s the small fundamentals and blocking out of distractions that will truly define their success moving forward. The team is highly competitive and is playing with a lot of heart which were definitely the positives. However, there are still some fundamentals of the game that need improvement.
Head varsity football coach Rodney Hughey is starting his fifth season at the helm of the program. He shared that his team is playing hard and talks about what they need to improve on. He talks about how extremely hard they’ve been playing and what exactly they need to improve on.
Seniors James Kelly and Chase McKnight, and junior Alpha Jalloh were highlighted as key players this season. Kelly plays on offense and defense, McKnight is a linebacker and Jalloh is the quarterback.
“We have a really, really good core group of players, it’s kind of hard to identify all of them in one core group, the people that will make the team what it is, is a core group of maybe 15 to 20 guys,” said Hughey.
From this we can conclude that the team has several standout players who are expected to make significant contributions this year. Additionally the Titans have a strong group of players who are all essential to the teams overall success, making it difficult to single out any players. The depth and quality of the roster is promising for the Titans performance this season.
The Titans are three games into the season having played Centerville, Colonial Forge and Forest Park. They are still looking for their first victory.
Hughey said: “They want to win, the players aren’t going out there not wanting to win, they want to win but it’s the small fundamentals and small decisions that we make that have been in the way of that taking place. They are really super good guys and they really wanna do it but they are still learning how to do it.” The coach’s acknowledgement of the players potential proposes that with continued learning and focus on weak areas, the Titans are on the right path to achieving their goals.
The Titans have a bye-week this week, but will host C.G Woodson next Friday, September 27, at 7:00pm for the Homecoming game.
