The wrestling team is a force to reckon with. Last season, the team had 5 wrestlers qualify for the regional tournament. Its main goal this season is to send athletes to the state tournament.
“This season, we need to build momentum from last year from our senior and junior class,” said Head Coach Chris Marshall, who was a two-time NCAA Division I All-American at Central Michigan University. “Our numbers of female participants have increased as well, they are having great success,” said Marshall.
“We’re working on the small details in our technique, as well as our endurance on the mat,” said senior Naria Medrano, who recently became the first female All-American wrestler in school history. “My goal for the season is to win the state championship, but at the same time have fun. My ultimate goal with wrestling is to become a wrestling commit but on a bigger scale.
Medrano added: “I hope to one day make it to the Olympics to represent the United States or even my home country El Salvador. I’m also hoping one day to be able to coach young girls and pass down my knowledge and experiences to grow womens wrestling.”
Another athlete to look out for is senior Hassan Bokab, who is another dominant force on the boys side and is working to become an All-American.
“I’m feeling good. I got a great start to the season and we are just feeling better and better,” said Bokab.
After having a rough season last year, he has been working hard on everything to perfect his game in every way possible.
“My only goal this season is seeing the state podium,” he said. “I have been unable to do that these past two years, but I have a good feeling about this year,” said Bokab.
