It’s officially the holiday season, a time for festivities, gatherings with loved ones and opportunities to serve the community of Alexandria. Volunteer opportunities are a great way to get into the holiday spirit: it’s devoting time to make someone else’s holiday season special. From tree sales to toy drives, this December is full of opportunities to give back. Here is a curated collection of upcoming volunteer events in Alexandria.
This weekend is full of holiday themed occasions! The Alexandria Police Department needs volunteers to help sell Christmas trees to raise money for their annual camps this summer. Dec. 13 and 14 are the last days to serve at this sale with 2-hour slot selections from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Additionally, the Mayoral Youth Committee is hosting a cleanup and volunteers are needed on Dec. 13, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m at Jones Point Park. One’s participation will “promote fostering youth engagement” around Alexandria.
Chances to contribute don’t end there! Volunteer Alexandria is hosting their annual Toys4ALX toy drive on Dec. 13 and has a variety of service options. If you are bilingual, Spanish-speaking volunteers are needed to help assist families in the waiting room and take on tasks to help the drive run smoothly.
Additionally, the ACHS Key Club is participating in Salvation Army’s Bell Ringing on Dec. 17. From 4-5 p.m., you can volunteer to ring bells and collect funds for the Salvation Army on the Burke and Herbert Bank corner in Old Town. There are only a few slots left, so secure your opportunity to serve while you can!
Volunteer Alexandria has paired with The Holiday Project, a national nonprofit organization consisting of thousands of volunteers who visit with people spending the holidays confined to hospitals, nursing homes and other institutions. The organization has planned visits throughout the metropolitan area up to and on Christmas Day where volunteers can sing carols and distribute cards and gifts to patients.
Whether it is an hour of one’s time, or a whole day spent in service, contributions big and small make a significant difference in the lives of others. If interested in any of these volunteer opportunities, check out the links below to read more about the opportunities and sign up!
