On March 23, ACHS students attended this year’s Walter Dean Myers Awards, a celebration of diversity in children’s literature hosted by We Need Diverse Books. At the event, four books were honored and, following the ceremony, a conversation with the authors was led by author Elizabeth Acevedo. The authors also answered questions from students in the audience and signed books after the talk. “I hope [they’re] inspired,” said Caroline Richmond, executive director of We Need Diverse Books, when asked what she hopes students will take away from attending the event. “I hope that they all continue diversifying their shelves, reading and learning about the world, and maybe writing or illustrating as well.”
