Indoor track’s “Senior Night” was held at 7:30 a.m. at Episcopal High School’s indoor track on Jan. 25., where multiple schools from all over Virginia showed up to compete. Two seniors were recognized for their hard work and dedication this season.
Spotlighting senior Viktor Gunderson who appreciates teamwork when it comes to his success. “Even though it’s a sport where you compete alone most of the time, it really helps feeling like there are people there with you as you run. Having people support you and have your back, can make you compete even better than you expect.” Gunderson said.
Gunderson’s favorite event is the 400m sprint, and the 4x400m relay. To him, not only are they eventful and nerve-racking, but they are also very fun and entertaining to watch. The most memorable thing he’s done thus far he said is “not only getting to compete at Liberty University last winter, but also just building up people’s courage and helping them become better athletes.”
As for Gunderson’s post secondary plans after high school he wants to take a gap year and move to either Texas or Arizona for work and travel.
The next, senior recognition is Akeda Tash whose presence on the team is surreal to her. “It’s because it’s a community I never thought I would be a part of. Before joining, I never imagined myself as a track athlete, but now, I can’t picture my life without it. The support and camaraderie within the team makes it feel like a second family, and I love being surrounded by people who share the same drive and competitive spirit as I do.” Tash says.
Tash’s main event is pole vault and she has been doing it for the last five seasons. “Every vault feels like a new challenge, and I love the feeling of flying through the air. It’s a mentally and physically demanding event, but that’s what makes it so rewarding when I improve.” said Tash.
A few goals she upholds for the upcoming outdoor season is to hold a new personal record as her main event is pole vault. Whether it’s increasing her vault height or refining her techniques. By doing so, Tash says “I plan to stay consistent by working on strength, flexibility, and conditioning outside of official practice. This extra effort will help me stay ahead and improve my overall performance.”
Her post secondary plans for after high school concludes attending a four year university pursuing a career in business information systems analytics.
