Virginia District 39 is holding a special election to elect a new member for the Virginia State Senate.

Virginia’s 39th district, whose State Senate position is currently held by Sen. Adam Ebbin (D), includes The City of Alexandria, Parts of Arlington County and Parts of Fairfax County. Ebbin is stepping down to take a role in Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s administration.    

The Alexandria and Arlington Democratic Committees held an unassembled caucus, or firehouse primary, to select the Democratic nominee on Jan. 13

The Democratic candidates were Del. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker (D-5), former Del. Mark Levine (D-45), former Vice Mayor Amy Jackson and Charles Sumpter. 

Elizabeth Bennett Parker won the primary with 3,281 votes, followed by Levine, with 807 votes. Bennett Parker is nominated to run in the Virginia Senate race.

The Republican Committee was also scheduled to hold an unassembled caucus on Jan. 13. to select the Republican nominee for the position, but it was canceled. 

Julie Robben Lineberry was nominated to represent Virginia Republicans in the Virginia State Senate election.

JULIE ROBBEN LINEBERRY

Julie Robben Lineberry (R) is a long time Alexandria resident. She is currently an Alexandra realtor as well as a committed volunteer in community organizations like Girl Scouts, Inova Alexandria Hospital Auxiliary and the Alexandria Electoral Board. 

Lineberry graduated from Webster University and majored in social science and history. She was the Midwest regional Young Republican vice chair. She worked on the Winthrop Rockefeller for Arkansas Governor campaign, and on a 1972 Missouri state committee to reelect the president, before getting a job at the White House. 

After Former President Nixon’s resignation, Lineberry was unemployed and started her career as a realtor. For over 40 years she has worked as a realtor in the Alexandria, Arlington area.

ELIZABETH BENNETT-PARKER

Elizabeth Bennett-Parker (D) is currently the District 5 Virginia State Delegate. Bennett-Parker was born in and currently resides in Alexandria. She graduated from Cornell University and earned a Master’s from the University of London.

She previously served as Vice Mayor of Alexandria, and  District 45 state delegate in the Virginia House of Delegates.  

Bennett-Parker has served on many committees including The Chair of the Operation Board of the Virginia Railway Express, Alexandria’s Community Criminal Justice Board and the Commission on Employment. 

Additionally, Bennett-Parker founded Fruitcycle, a social enterprise fighting food waste and food-insecurity. She is also dedicated to community organizations like Together We Bake, a non-profit job training and personal growth program for women.
