Student Study Tips

With classwork piling on, spring sports, upcoming AP exams, SOLs, and SATs, it is easy to start feeling overwhelmed. In the stretch between winter and spring break, it can be hard to stay focused and motivated. To help students out during stressful times, titans share their favorite ways to manage their time and workload.

A popular strategy among many students is putting off work. “Waiting until the last minute to start work, especially important projects, is what I recommend to struggling students,” said junior Tim Taylor. “I found that procrastination was the best method for me, the added stress is a great motivator.”

“When I need to study for an upcoming test, I usually leave my textbooks open while I watch TV or go on my phone,” says sophomore Carmen Carlson, who is focused on developing good study habits for the future. “After experimenting with other ideas, having my textbook and maybe a few other review materials around me while I scroll aimlessly through my phone has really helped me feel prepared this year.”

Another helpful time management strategy is ignoring your work entirely. “If you just don’t think about your work, it’s like it’s not even there!” says senior Mike Micheal, who is a strong advocate for shirking responsibilities. “I always used to be so worried about getting my work done and getting it in on time,” he said, “But now that I ignore it all I have so much more free time, it’s amazing.”

Senior Jenny Jenkins also recommends waiting until work is completely unavoidable. “Waiting until the last possible minute to start assignments gives me time to focus on other, more important things,” said Jenkins. “I realized that I would rather spend more time binge-watching new TV shows than stressing over some project,” she explained.

Our students have a variety of different tips and tricks to manage their time effectively, but finding out what works best for you is what’s important. Hopefully, these dedicated titans will inspire you to change your study habits for the better.
