Minga, an app used to identify and track students, has now become the literal face of Alexandria City High School. Within one school year, Minga has taken over nearly every function within the school. Previously, Minga was used for student identification, hall passes, and keeping track of what lunches students were supposed to go to.
Since then, Minga has expanded to regulate people using the ACHS and Minnie Howard parking lots, claiming school lunches, entering classes, using the bathroom, managing sports, and boarding the buses.
Teachers and students’ opinions on whether the integration of Minga into core ACHS activities differ, with some people who unreservedly support Minga and others who completely disapprove of Minga. “At this point just give Minga the job of running the school,” said teacher Wount Lode when asked his opinion on Minga’s role in ACHS.
“I think all of it is great, they’re doing everything better than the admin ever could.” said student Min Galover when asked about their stance on Minga.
In return for the increased use of Minga, Minga plans on providing funding for schools. This decision has received positive and negative feedback. “We’re a public school, we don’t need this company to step in to save the day.” said an ACHS administrator who requested to be quoted anonymously.
“Funding is funding. We didn’t have much anyway, so I don’t see a problem with Minga helping out now,” said administrator Minga P. Mo.
Along with everything, Minga has proposed to buy Alexandria City High School for $7.2 million. If the deal goes through they will take ownership of the King Street and Minnie Howard campus. They also plan to rename the school to MGHS, or Minga High School, effectively turning ACHS into a private school. The school board is currently discussing if they want to go through with this, and plan to have a decision by March 30.
