It’s understandable if you haven’t heard of Cartoons DK, since the group is Denmark-based, similar to Robbie Williams’ bio pic “Better Man,” where most of us didn’t really know who he was. One could point out some similarities with their up beat music, though their eccentric outfits and whacky prop-instruments don’t make it obvious that they’re their own thing. With their ecstatic, in a panic, cartoonish mix of music that just makes you feel like you could do it.

Okay, let’s dial back the rhyming and actually go over them. Originally “The Scooters” band was created in the late 80s with a 50s rockabilly sound, but later in the 90s adopted a new look, style, and theme altogether. The band would unexpectedly pioneer the Technobilly genre, a combination of the already established Rockabilly genre with the active 90s Eurodance Techno genre. Paired with their outfits of caricatured 50s greasers, a working class youth subculture known for their rebellious style and slicked back hair, with a vibrant twist and outlandish instruments, made the band look strikingly different than before.
The band, consisting of Martin Østengaard, Jesper Dukholt, Erling Jensen, Dave Stevens, Natasja Skov and Karina Jensen, would then go under their own zany stage names with Martin becoming Toonie their lead vocalist, alongside Jesper, Erling and Dave going as Sponge, Shooter and Buzz. Those three toons worked as the band’s instrumentalists, while Natasja and Karina bloomed into Puddy and Boop, as the background vocals. From there, Cartoons DK were reborn and created a multitude of high energy songs including their “Greatest Toons.”
To start, maybe you’ve been flipping through the TV and came across “Ramalama Daisy,” a super sweet song about a girl that blows your “feet off the ground” and makes your “head spin around.” Henceforth your “Ramalama Daisy,” as the song calls her, is similar to the 7th track “Yoko,” which refers to her as your girly Bono and Yoko Ono. Both songs get that lovely point across about how you feel about your sugar.
Have you ever said “Nana Na” to someone followed by “boo boo?” It’s understandable if you have. Though in this case, it has another meaning, which is simply believing in yourself. This is probably the most positive song out of the lineup. It’s about how you can be whoever you want, be it the “President or movie star,” and how it “doesn’t matter who you are” just as long as you believe in yourself. The song promotes such a globally understandable message of self love.
The last song and biggest one of them all is “Cartoons Medley,” a beautiful mash up of the majority of songs on the album, excluding only a few of them. But despite that, the song is still greatly entertaining with it playing smoothly throughout its duration. With the snippets flowing more than exceptional with each other, similar to the iconic Weird Al Yankovic’s Polka songs that mash up other celebrities’ music with each other. My personal favorite part of the song is when “Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep” goes into “Big Coconuts.” So if someone wanted a quick crash course on what the group’s sound is, this would be the song for it.
I’d say this, the Cartoons are never too far for you to hear, be it from Denmark, or from the heart of your community. So remember “All your wishes will come true, as long as you believe in you,” and that Cartoons DK are surely here to stay as certified-toon classics.
