Alexandria City High School offers a plethora of art classes to satisfy each student's needs. The school offers nine classes: Art I, Art II, Art III, Art IV, Ceramics I, Ceramics II, AP 2-D Art & Design, AP 3-D Art & Design, and AP Drawing Portfolio. Art courses are taught by Ms. Beth Coast, Ms. Tabitha Eller, and Ms. Pamela Johnson. Art I-IV focuses on the fundamentals of drawing, sculpting, painting, printmaking, and 3D design. Ceramics I and II explore 3D clay figures and create decorative and functional pieces. AP 2-D Art & Design encompasses the use of 2D elements of art and design. AP 3-D Art & Design uses 3-D elements to focus on various principles of design.

To start the day off, catch the Blue Line headed towards Largo Town Center at the King Street or Braddock Road Metro Stations in Alexandria. Ride the train until you arrive at the Metro Center stop, where it’s time to get off. Walk down G St. towards 13th St. and you’ll find Bluestone Lane Coffee Shop. The shop is clean and quiet with a bright aesthetic. Employees at Bluestone Lane recommend you get the “Avocado/With the Lot,” which is avocado toast with prosciutto and feta cheese and tomatoes. For drinks, they recommend the “Affogato,” which is vanilla ice cream served with a double shot of espresso.

Do Students Feel Safe at School? Kind Of.

On October 6, Alexandria City High School’s King Street Campus went into lockdown due to a student on school grounds trying to enter the building with a handgun. Students and staff were instructed to lock their classroom doors and remain there until further notice. A week later, on October 14, the school went under lockdown after reports of an anonymous threat. These two incidents, as well as other events during the beginning of the school year, have raised concerns about whether students feel safe at school.

On the morning of August 31, Alexandria City’s Varsity volleyball team boarded a plane en route to Orlando, Florida to play in the 2021 Kaylee Scholarship Association Fall Volleyball Classic Tournament. This is the third time the team has gone to Florida to attend the KSA tournament, and this year, they finished first in their bracket 5-0. After winning the state championship title following an undefeated season, Alexandria City’s varsity volleyball team was eager to start the new season off with a bang.
