On March 20, 2023, Alexandria held the first meeting in its plan to overhaul zoning in Alexandria with the aim of combating social, economic, and racial inequality. Titled, “Zoning for Housing,” the event aimed to “explore and understand the extent of past discriminatory housing policies and their continued impact, especially on people of color and/or low-income.

At a meeting on August 25, the Alexandria School Board discussed a controversial grading policy focused on addressing equity problems. The meeting came weeks late, and the proposed grading policy, which stated that homework should not be graded, NHI’s should be given instead of zeros, and grades should generally reflect mastery of the curricula rather than completed work, showed a complete disconnect from teacher input.

On October 18, General Colin Powell died from complications of COVID-19. Powell was born on April 5, 1937 to Jamaican immigrants and grew up in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. He studied geology at the City College of New York and described himself as a “C average student.” After attending the Reserves Officers Training Corps while in college, Powell started his career in the military, fighting in the Vietnam War and eventually becoming a four-star general.

‘Lady Bird’ Movie Review

Lady Bird, released in 2017, with a score of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes over 398 reviews, has stood the test of time. Written and directed by Greta Gerwig, the movie is a coming-of-age story that documents a high schooler's troubled relationships with her friends and family. The protagonist, Christine McPherson (played by Saoirse Ronan) is unsatisfied with her life at a Catholic School in Sacramento. She goes by the name “Lady Bird” instead of Christine to defy her mother, and she longs to one day reside on the East Coast.
