Freshmen Crew Triumphs States by .3 seconds

In a nail-biting finish, the ACHS freshmen girls crew team won the Virginia state championship by a mere 0.3 seconds on May 6 at Sandy Run Regional Park. This victory is a remarkable feat for the young rowers, who have shown exceptional grit and determination throughout the season.

From Vietnam, Chile, Singapore, and Afghanistan, students from different countries have participated in foreign exchange programs or immigrated to the United States to attend Alexandria City High School. International exchange students Kent Ngyuen, Florencia Vidall, Eliza Inkema, and Kabir Kabir have adjusted to changes between ACHS’s environment and that of their previous school systems.

Many members of the indoor track team are zooming into qualifications for states this season! Seniors Daniel Franklin, Isaiah Kargo-Owens, Eli Wilson and Hassan Kamara placed first place in their relay heat during the Liberty Premier Invitational Track Meet on January 7. Their exceptional times automatically qualified them for states, surpassing the need to go to districts or regionals.

As hall sweeps begin to penalize tardy students, Essie Jones, the new PBIS events coordinator, plans to shift the narrative by rewarding students who are on time instead of punishing those who are not. Students who are present without being tardy for two straight weeks from Nov. 28 to Dec. 9 will have the opportunity to win a Regal movie ticket.

Hispanic Heritage Month is commemorated annually in the U.S. from September 15 to October 15. Latinos Unidos, a student group for Hispanic students, has planned events throughout the month to celebrate the impact the Latino community has on ACHS.

Titan Debate Team Advances to Nationals

The Titan Debate Team for this year includes Francisca Pitterle, Kate Griffis, Sophia Bassingthwaite, Zion Foulcard, Madison Enow, Maryam Niazi, and Angelina Martinez. Francisca Pitterle and Sylvia Rahim make up the varsity policy debate team for the school and will be competing in the nationals competition to represent our school. The topic for policy debate for this year is the resolution that the United States federal government should substantially increase its protection of water resources.

Students speak on Travis Scott dispute over recent Astroworld Festival

News about Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival has broken out throughout multitudes of social media platforms and news channels. Many are concerned about the incidents that took place and the tragic outcome of 9 confirmed deaths and over 300 injured. People that attended the concert have filed at least 17 lawsuits against Travis Scott and others involved with the event to hold them responsible for the crowd surge. This has led to public concern about how previous Travis Scott concerts were handled.
