Mr. Sneakers: Alexandria City's True Mascot

Mr. Sneakers: Alexandria City’s True Mascot

June 12, 2023
Mr. Sneakers is one of Alexandria City High School’s greatest anomalies. You might have seen him in someone’s hand while walking to the bathroom, scaring people crossing its path, or even thrown in the bushes by Parker Grey Stadium by sophomores who want to get rid of the infamous taxidermied squirrel. Many ACHS students, current and past, will have Mr. Sneakers etched in their minds forever. Is that a good thing? Only time will tell, but it’s certainly something.

The Forgotten Campus: ACHS’s Satellite

June 3, 2022
ACHS’s bright, quiet Satellite Campus is one of four campuses that collectively make up ACPS’s only high school. Is the Connected High School Network, Net-working?

June 3, 2022
In 2019, the former ACPS School Board approved Superintendent Dr. Gregory Hutchings to form what is called the High School Project, better known as The Connected High School Network. This program was designed to further integrate students at the Chance For Change, Satellite, Minnie Howard, and King Street campuses of Alexandria City High School as one whole high school in Alexandria. The recent developments of creating a more structured and versatile campus-based high school reflects the concerns of overcrowding in the King Street campus and lack of flexibility to a high school education.

Five first-place titles. The Washington Post’s Track Athlete of the Year. Innumerable championships. Hours of practice a week while keeping up a 3.49 GPA. Record-breaking scores. Few individuals, let alone high school students, would be cut out for this, but Wisdom Williams has always shot through barriers.

Recently, I wrote an op-ed on why some students are reluctant to share their ideas candidly. I suggested potential solutions to the problem, namely outlets for expressions such as Socratic Seminars and class discussions. This time, I’d like to talk about another form of expression that students should take advantage of if they can — joining, or contributing to, Theogony.
