On Saturday, April 22, ACHS senior Milan Rex was honored for her donation of $1,000 to the Miracle League of Alexandria (MLA).
Rex was chosen as Gatorade Player of the Year, which is an award given to outstanding high school athletes nationwide. With the award, she is able to donate $1,000 to a youth sports organization of her choosing– and she chose The Miracle League. The award comes only weeks after winning the Virginia State Volleyball Championship with her ACHS team.
To Andrew Orzel, it seems like years since anyone in his government and economics classes expressed conservative ideas. That is concerning — given the diverse nature of the ACHS student body, one would expect a wide range of ideas discussed in a classroom setting.
New walkways, grassy pavilions, and restaurants in recent years have led to a tourist revival along Alexandria’s Potomac waterfront. But city officials and business leaders know this new energy is threatened by an old problem: chronic flooding that regularly puts big sections of Old Town deep underwater. Although Potomac flooding has been a fact of life in Old Town since pre-colonial days, a combination of climate change and regional development has made the problem more frequent and severe.
Any sort of roadway collision is just as traumatic, as almost being in one. “Almost-accidents” go unreported, and since the pandemic, these incidents have increased dramatically. Pedestrian fatalities in Northern Virginia increased 21% from 2019 to 2020, according to a report from the Governor’s Highway Safety Association.
