Campus Disconnect: Six Students Speak Out

Campus Disconnect: Six Students Speak Out

December 15, 2022
Unbeknownst to some, Alexandria City High School (ACHS) diverges into four separate campuses: King Street, Minnie Howard, Chance for Change (CFC), and Satellite. Though the King Street Campus is only one of four, many see it as the center point, with the other three campuses acting as subdivisions, rather than existing as four interconnected bodies. This heavy disconnect has separated each campus to the point of being identified as four different high schools, despite them all bearing the title “Alexandria City High School.” To address the unique experience that each campus offers, six students were interviewed on their perspectives as a student from each campus.

The Forgotten Campus: ACHS’s Satellite

June 3, 2022
ACHS’s bright, quiet Satellite Campus is one of four campuses that collectively make up ACPS’s only high school. Focused on creating a flexible atmosphere with online learning, many students who want a calmer, one-on-one approach to education choose Satellite, often because they work, have anxiety, are professional athletes, or simply prefer the smaller environment.

Is the Connected High School Network, Net-working?

June 3, 2022
In 2019, the former ACPS School Board approved Superintendent Dr. Gregory Hutchings to form what is called the High School Project, better known as The Connected High School Network. This program was designed to further integrate students at the Chance For Change, Satellite, Minnie Howard, and King Street campuses of Alexandria City High School as one whole high school in Alexandria. The recent developments of creating a more structured and versatile campus-based high school reflects the concerns of overcrowding in the King Street campus and lack of flexibility to a high school education.
