Opinion: The Bureaucratic Nightmare of Titan Lunch

Yahney-Marie Sangaré and James Libresco March 9, 2023
Although the push for a 74-minute lunch program wasn’t successful, there’s a lot we can learn from it. I’ve been on the Student Lunch Committee since its foundation. Here’s what I saw.

Students Walk Out In Protest of Titan Lunch Cancellation

January 31, 2023
On January 24, the Independent Student Lunch Committee (SLC) hosted a walkout to show the mass support for the Titan Lunch proposal. The walkout came after ACHS Executive Principal Peter Balas announced that the new extended lunch period would not be implemented for the second half of the 2022-2023 school year as planned. Theogony reported that Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt and her Central Office Leadership Team blocked the plan the previous week. This decision created immediate uproar from students, parents and staff.

As the second quarter begins, changes to the schedule are still on their way. A new proposal has been given to the School Board by a passionate group of students who believe that the best way to support students is to provide them with a 74-minute block to do what is essential— starve and forget.

School Torn Between Lunch Arrangements

September 27, 2022
The first day of school usually consists of a lot of stressful and confusing situations, however, most were more alarmed by the end of Lunch and Learn. Lunch and Learn was a huge part of our school last year. Lunch and Learn was a 74-minute universal lunch block that gave students and staff freedom to choose their activities. Although a primary benefit was giving time for students and teachers to meet, Lunch and Learn benefited students in a variety of other ways. This school year, Lunch and Learn is gone, and students are divided between 3 different lunch blocks. In its absence, teachers and students have strong opinions.

Without Lunch and Learn, Clubs Struggle to Meet

September 19, 2022
As the debate on Lunch and Learn’s potential return continues, many clubs begin to meet after school since meeting during school is no longer an option. Homework, sports, and overall availability are among the challenges that make it difficult for students to participate in clubs after school. Many students support Lunch and Learn since it would give them more time in their schedule to stay involved with clubs.

Shows Instead of Prose: The Value of TV Shows in the Classroom

March 31, 2022
Television plays a huge role in the way people see the world. Shows can provide entertainment, distraction, and a connection to pop culture. But Titans say that they can also be educational. Theogony kidnapped multiple Titans and ACHS teachers to learn more about the Titan community’s views on the impact of TV shows on students.

Students Adjust to Non-Traditional Lunch

October 13, 2021
Instead of the traditional lunch block schedule that A.C. previously used, where four lunches would go in shifts, there is now one  74-minute lunch period. Students can use this time to get work done, see teachers and friends, in addition to eating lunch.
