Opinion: Double Standards in Sports

The annual “March Madness”  basketball tournament always creates a lot of buzz in the sports community. Typically, when the tournament is mentioned, people assume that they are talking about the men’s tournament. Recognizing and equally appreciating women's sports has been an issue for a while now, but significant progress has been made. This year, the women's tournament was much more entertaining than the men’s. The women’s tournament was competitive and intense while the men’s final four consisted of seemingly random teams. In the women’s championship game between The University of Iowa and Louisiana State University, there were 2 main players who stood out, Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark.

Science Bowl is on a Roll

The Science Bowl is more than just a club at ACHS, it is a collaborative team of students that participate in competitions throughout the year. The team is led by two teachers, Tim Anderson and Jatanee Reyes. The two of them work together to give the team guidance and prepare them for competitions. The team has to be knowledgeable about topics from biology to physics in order to perform well in competition. In terms of student leadership, senior Leah Devendorf, is the team captain.

The Safe Space Club is a new club that is led by juniors Casey Marsh and Noah Jennings. This is the club’s first year in action, and Marsh and Jennings have many ideas to promote it. Although ACHS offers a variety of counseling services for students, there aren’t as many places for students to confide in their peers. When you just want someone to talk to, speaking to an adult can be intimidating for some students, so Safe Space Club creates another outlet for them.
