About Us
Welcome to the website of Theogony, the student-run newspaper of Alexandria City High School in Alexandria, Virginia. Theogony is based at the King St. campus, but covers news across all four campuses and the City of Alexandria.
All content on this website is written, produced and edited by students at Alexandria City High School. The online edition is typically updated on a daily basis, and the print edition is distributed at least five times throughout the year.
Theogony has won numerous national awards, including a half dozen Best of SNO awards, which highlight the top articles on SNO sites. Our articles have been covered by outlets including the Washington Post, Washingtonian, Alexandria Times, ALXnow and more.
Theogony operates as a public forum and has operated as such for at least 16 years. This means that:
- Students make almost all editorial decisions, and make all content editorial decisions.
- The only other person who edits is the faculty adviser, though they only edit based on ethics, legal, grammar/punctuation, and journalistic formatting and style;
- The faculty adviser does not regulate the topics covered;
- Administrators do not make editorial decisions;
- Students have no practice of submitting content to school officials for prior review;
- Students seek advertisements and donations from the community;
- Students can take the course multiple years in a row;
- Theogony’s website receives thousands of views from members of the wider Alexandria community;
- Theogony’s website receives comments from members of the wider Alexandria community;
- Theogony accepts letters to the editor, op-eds, tips, and other submissions from the wider Alexandria community;
- Theogony’s print edition is available outside of the school, for example at St. Elmo’s and the Dairy Godmother;
- Theogony’s articles have been reprinted in city publications, including the Alexandria Gazette Packet, the Alexandria Times, and the Zebra;
- Theogony’s articles have been cited by numerous publications for the wider Alexandria and national communities, including the Washington Post, Washingtonian, ALXnow, Alexandria Times, and Patch;
- Theogony’s articles are consistently spread on social media among members of the wider Alexandria community.
