The ‘Yarn Club’ at Alexandria City High School is a welcoming, comfortable club that focuses on creating a friendly community for anyone who is interested in learning or already knows how to knit and crochet. This club is led by senior co-presidents Deanna Kosinski and Lilliana Escobar whose goal is to bond with new people over a shared interest in knitting and crocheting.
Yarn Club meets every Wednesday after school, where they fill their time crocheting or knitting new and in-progress pieces. Yarn Club is a great place to go to after school if you are looking to relax, socialize, and yarn away! Club member Kalina Janevska said “I love the community and the people in the club. I always feel welcome.”
Club members are able to keep the pieces they make or they can decide if they want to donate the pieces they make. Donated items from the yarn club go straight to Saint Teresa Church in Washington DC. These knitted and crocheted items will be given to homeless and battered families to enjoy.
Yarn Club is a space for people who are interested in learning how to knit and crochet as well. Leaders Kosinski and Escobar will help members with crocheting while Senior Secretary Amy Akintola helps members with knitting. Fellow club members are always willing to step in and help new members when needed. Sophomore club member, Noah Sedehi said “The student organizers of the yarn club are extremely helpful, providing videos and demonstrating how to knit or crochet for beginners.”
Socializing is a huge aspect of the yarn club. Laughter and conversations fill the room during the entire meeting. Sophomore club member Josephine Damico-Lassman said, “My favorite part of the meetings are knitting and chatting with my friends.”
People who have a love and interest for knitting and crocheting are what make the club have a sociable and positive environment. Akintola said, “People are passionate about something and it’s nice seeing that passion flow into others.”
