“One Battle After Another” is an intense and emotional film that explores how life’s struggles often come one after another with little time to recover. The movie has already won seven awards, four at the Golden Globes and three from the Critics Choice. It also has seven nominations at the SAG awards and an astonishing 13 nominations at the Oscars. This movie focuses on perseverance, personal growth, and the emotional, and in this case, physical weight, of facing constant challenges, all brought to life by a strong cast. Overall, this film vastly exceeded my expectations because it combines intense action with meaningful character development and emotional depth.
This film follows Pat, a former radical now living off the grid with his daughter Willa, but their quiet life is ruined by Lockjaw, a determined government official tied to Pat’s past. As old conflicts rise and former enemies and allies appear, Pat is forced back into his unusual and dangerous life, with the added responsibility of being a father.
One of the film’s strongest elements is the cast– the performances feel believable, especially in the deeper moments. Even when the plot becomes chaotic, the performances keep the audience grounded and invested. However, some of the transitions between scenes feel very abrupt and could have been smoother.
Visually, the film is spectacular. Many scenes are filmed with a steady immersive style that make the viewer feel like they are pulled along the ride with these crazy characters. This is shown in the car chase scene where the camera stays at ground level and moves up and down hilly roads for miles, making viewers feel like they are really there, anxious for what’s over the next bump. The fast scenes are hard to keep up with, but this movie does a great job of slowing down and really digging deeper into the plot, which helps balance out the more violent parts of the movie.
The story itself is layered between political tension, family drama and personal conflict. Sometimes the plot feels crowded, but the actors make me want to keep watching. But what makes this movie stand out the most is that even in scenes filled with danger or confrontation, the film returns to questions of loyalty, identity, and personal responsibility. That deeper focus gives the movie more power than a typical, gore heavy action movie.
If I were to rate this movie out of five stars, I would give it four and a half because of its amazing casting, screenplay, and plot, to its deeper meanings and thought-provoking ending. I was invested throughout the entire movie, even with its 2 hour and 42 minute run-time. I would say it is definitely worth the watch if you enjoy movies with non-stop action, but also want opportunities to slow down and take a deeper look into each character.
